With the arrest of five men, Delhi police today claimed to have busted an inter-state gang of armed dacoits whose kingpin used to fly to West Bengal after every offence to evade police surveillance.
According to police, Harun Khan alias Haru, Amarji, Taiyyab, Babu Saikh, Mohd Zaafar were arrested by the Crime Branch of Delhi police of Thursday.
"The gang has members from West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and even Bangladesh, some of them are still on the run. With the arrest we have solved two cases of dacoity, one of murder and several cases of burglary," said Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav.
Harun Khan is the kingpin who used to fly to West Bengal after every offence in order to evade police surveillance. He has friends across the border which had been utilised by him to form a gang involving Bangladeshis, he said.
Two cases of armed dacoity were registered at Shahbad Dairy police station within a span of 2 days in September. Realising the gravity of the situation, police scrambled its informers and started technical surveillance, police said.
"On Thursday, information was received that one Harun Khan alias Haru who commits sensational crimes would be coming at 11:00 PM along with his associates in an auto at Wazirpur Depot from Prembody flyover side.
"Following the information, a trap was laid and an auto was intercepted at the instance of the informer and five persons found sitting in it were apprehended. A country-made pistol with two live cartridges of .315 bore was recovered Khan," said Yadav.
During interrogation, Harun allegedly told police that he had murdered one Suresh in Geeta Colony area in March, 2012 after an altercation with him.
He also disclosed that on September 25, he along with his associates went to the area of Shahbad Dairy and entered into a godown by scaling the wall and then overpowered the guard and other labourers and stole a large quantity of copper scrap in their three autos. The scrap was later sold to one Mohd Zaafar who has also been arrested, police said.
Two days later, the gang struck at Jindal Public School and overpowered the inmates with their weapons and took away cash, mobile phones, jewellery from them and fled.
The mobile phone robbed in this incident has been recovered Amarjit who has also been arrested with the gang.
His brother was also involved in the incident and is absconding. The gang members also disclosed their involvements in more than dozen incidents of burglary in Mori Gate area itself and several dozen in other parts of Delhi, police said.
