Five Al Qaeda militants planning to carry out an attack in Gujranwala city were killed today by Pakistan police during a raid at a house in Punjab province.
"The militants were hiding in a house in Wapda town. When a CTD team along with police surrounded the house and asked the inmates to surrender," the Counter Terror Department (CTD) said in a statement.
"But the militants opened fire at police. The police team returned the fire. During the shootout five terrorists were killed and three others managed to escape taking advantage of darkness," the CTD said in a statement.
According to CTD, it received intelligence reports that eight militants belonging to Al-Qaeda were planning to carry out an attack in Gujranwala city, some 80km from Lahore, yesterday.
The CTD recovered one Kalashnikov, two pistols, two hand grenades and explosive material from the hideout.
