Five star hotels in the national capital have been asked to conserve water and electricity as per the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) guideline for making them "green" hotels.
The need was felt to conserve natural resources consumed by five star hotels in Delhi as they were the major consumers of natural resources -- water, power and land -- and also one of the major waste generators and contributing towards climate change during a workshop to turn them green.
It was found that adherence to Green Hotels Guidelines were not satisfactory, an official statement said.
The DPCC guidelines include installation of on-site use of treated effluent in flushing, cooling towers, horticulture, installation of solar water heating systems, decentralised waste management systems like organic waste converter, biogas plants and composting, peripheral plantation, rain water harvesting, groundwater recharge, water auditing.
Five star hotels have been consuming about 15 million litres per day (MLD) of water and discharge about 10 MLD of waste water.
16 hotels were yet to install STP to treat their entire waste water, rain water harvesting system is installed at 33 hotels and solar water heating system at 21 hotels.
