Food supply chain in the country is marred by infrastructural bottlenecks, high food inflation, varied food preferences and low brand consciousness, an agriculture economist today said.
Addressing a seminar on food supply chain organised by FICCI in association with IIM Calcutta, Professor at ICRIER Arpita Mukherjee underlined the need to address policy gaps in agriculture and food processing industry.
"A stronger regulation to check anti-competitive practices and consumer protection; streamlining sourcing and supply chain; fiscal reforms, efficient implementation of food security rules, rationalising import duties and trade policies, could be some of the steps in enhancing the efficiency of the value chain," Mukherjee said in a release.
Speaking at the same conference FICCI Retail Committee Chairman Bijou Kurien said: "Connecting the producers of agricultural products and livestock with processors and producers of food and finally with the consumers is a mammoth task. Unless, we work in an integrated manner."
