Form meets utility in artistic furniture

An art deco representation of a writing desk with contrasting interiors, chamfered edges and matched lining is one among furniture designer Natasha Kohli's unique creations.
The handsome bureau with little drawers and multiple pigeon holes with lights, she calls "a conversation piece for a man" successfully marries art and technology in a happy union.
"When you get up in the morning and you walk into a room you need to have something that is breath taking," she says about the leather-wrapped desk.
There is also a smaller version of the cabinet which can be doubled up as a small bureau as well as a bar. The lower cabinet of this exotic zebrano wood work is made out of smoked eucalyptus, Kohli says.

Kohli's brainchild Filo, will exhibit these pieces of artistic furniture in its maiden design symposium of art furniture on April 8 at Stainless Gallery here.
The event has been planned with an aim to revive woodwork artisans and promulgate furniture as an art form.

"The minute you have a space, you have the responsibility to put something there- a lineage that your children can inherit," says Kohli who grew up in the US and India.
In the past the studio has decorated the private residencies and offices of global citizens. Presidential suites of leading hotels as well as the revival of the historic Falaknuma Palace hotel completes Filo's repertoire, she says.

Currently she works in her factory in Noida.
At the Gallery an entire wall measuring 30 feet wide features a piece of marquetry work. Titled "Accidental Skyline" it is fashioned out of 30 to 40 varieties of timber and veneers from across the world put together in hairline joints and then polished to give a polyester finish.
The work gives one a bird's eye view of the New York City from a window.
