He was 73.
Chaubey represented Buxar parliamentary constituency four times in Lok Sabha from from 1996 to 2009. He had also been an MLA from Chainpur seat of Kaimur district thrice in the Assembly.
Cutting across party line, leaders have mourned the death of Chaubey.
"Chaubey's death has caused an irreparable loss to Bihar and the party. His death caused a void in state's politics which will be difficult to fill up. He was a source of inspiration for party workers for his honesty and simple life style," Bihar BJP chief Mangal Pandey told PTI.
Union ministers Ram Vilas Paswan, Radha Mohan Singh, Ram Kripal Yadav, Giriraj Singh Bihar's former chief ministers Lalu Prasad, Rabri Devi and Jitan Ram Manjhi and senior Bihar BJP leaders Sushil Kumar Modi, Nand Kishore Yadav, Prem Kumar, others mourned the death of Chaubey.
Chaubey, who hailed from Kaimur district, was elected for the first time from Buxar Lok Sabha constituency in 1996. He represented the seat continuously till 2009, when he lost to RJD leader Jagadanand Singh by 2,000 votes.
Chaubey, who was considered close to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, had raised a banner of revolt against the party after he was denied ticket in 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
