A former footballer from Nigeria, Moses Kele Elias, who was arrested from Delhi two months ago, was today brought here where he will face trial for his alleged involvement in smuggling heroin worth Rs 20 lakh way back in 2011.
Moses, who played for a local club in the state's top league in Meghalaya, was expected to be produced in court tomorrow by the customs preventive department.
"Kele is wanted in a 2011 case after which he remained absconding. He was brought to the state capital on a court's remand. He will be produced tomorrow," Customs Preventive Superintendent D Bhattacharjee said.
Kele was wanted for smuggling 645 gm of brown sugar worth over Rs 20 lakh in 2011 along with a local accomplice, he said.
His local accomplice, Gideon Syiem, was arrested on August 24, 2011 on the charge of possessing narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances by the custom authorities.
