Additional special judge for CBI cases, S Jawahar, also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on Suresh in a case filed by CBI's Anti Corruption Branch here.
According to the prosecution, Suresh while serving as Port Trust chairman in 2009 had obtained sponsorship from Vijaya Shanti Builders for his son's admission to BE (Civil Engineering) degree programme in Anna University to the value of Rs 12 lakh.
Suresh had official dealings with the builder and the firm was running two weigh bridges in the premises of Chennai Port Trust during that period, a release said.
He was convicted under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The former top port trust official faced no other charges, the release said.
