Japanese photography and imaging company Fujifilm is aiming to corner about half of the market share of the mirrorless digital camera in the next two years, a top company official said.
The company is betting on its high image quality to gain market share and is looking on the growing number of photo professionals and young enthusiasts.
"Within the mirrorless market, we would like to have around 50 per cent share in a span of at least two years," Fujifilm India Managing Director Yasunobu Nishiyama told PTI.
About the sales this year, he said:"We have just started our focus this year, hardly three-four month back by pitching our X series."
Presently, Sony with its Alpha series is leading in the mirrorless digital camera segment along with other makers as Olympus, Panasonic etc.
To expand its offerings , the company today launched X- E3, its latest addition to the X Series range of premium mirrorless digital cameras. X-E3 was launched in Tokyo, Japan about three months back.
The company has a range of 25 lenses to support its camera and is adding around 4 lenses every year in it.
"Now mirrorless segment has a lot of features to offer and is now a winning combination. India has always followed the worldwide trends in photography, where share of mirrorless is increasing and by 2020, higher share is expected," he said.
Fujifilm, which is in the field of medical systems, photo imaging and graphic arts, is expecting a turnover of Rs 1,100 crore this year.
"Around 50 per cent would be contributed by the medical field, while the imagining business which includes cameras and coloured papers would have 30 per cent," he said adding that the graphic arts would contribute 15 per cent and rest 5 per cent would be from the recording media etc.
A mirrorless interchangeable lens camera is a like a conventional DSLR camera, but uses a digital display system rather than an optical mirror and optical viewfinder.
In 2016-17 fiscal, the total estimated size of the digital still camera was around 7.41 lakh units and DSLR (digital single-lens reflex camera) was the fastest growing segment with 20 per cent growth.
"In this, mirrorless segment had the highest growth of 300 per cent. In 2015-16, it was total 7,900 units and was 32,500 in 2016-17," said Fujifilm Executive VP Graphic Arts Division S M Ramprasad.
"Even in 2017-18, we are expecting a sales of 3.5-4 lakh units of professional and DSLR cameras in which 10 per cent would be mirrorless," he said.
