Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today announced that a dedicated fund will be set up for the welfare of personalities who have contributed in the growth of Punjabi language, art and culture.
Addressing at the inauguration of 7th All India Punjabi Conference here at Punjabi University, Badal said he was deeply anguished to see the families of "iconic figures", who left an indelible mark on the canvas of rich heritage of Punjabi art and culture, leading a life in penury and extreme difficult circumstances.
"I would ensure that the progeny of these noted stars of yesteryears lead a life with honour and dignity. It is the bounden duty of the state government not only to preserve the cultural heritage but also to safeguard the interests of the next of their kin," he said.
Badal also emphasised the need to document the achievements of eminent Punjabis in varied fields not only in the country but across the world by publishing a directory.
He said this initiative would not only help in honouring the "sons of the soil" for their rare feat but also motivate millions of others to follow their footsteps.
Badal exhorted intellectuals, writers and experts who are working in various universities of the state to come forward and play a proactive role in ensuring the all-round development of the state by sensitising underprivileged sections especially in rural areas about the significance of education and skill training.
