FYUP issue, Moily slams govt, UGC

Former Union Minister Veerappa Moily today accused the government of trying to "assault" the autonomy of Delhi University through UGC, to roll back Four Years UG Programme (FYUP), and called the move shocking.
"It has eroded the reputation of one of India's most reputed university. If Delhi University gives in to the pressure it would have an adverse repercussion worldwide," Moily said in a statement here.
Stating that the 4-year programme was launched in April 2012 and UGC's directive scrapping the FYUP has come on June 20 2014, he said that this has come as a bolt from the blue.

"It may be recalled that in May 2014, the present HRD Minister Smriti Irani planned to roll back the FYPU. UGC which is meant to ensure autonomy of Universities yielded to the pressure of the government and compromised on the autonomy and issued the directive to roll back the notification," he charged.
Taking a dig at UGC, Moily said "instead of acting as a buffer between the government and the university it has been doing the government bidding and acting against the autonomy of the universities."
Moily said, "The NDA government of Narendra Modi, having come to power with a governance and reforms mandate should stand up to the cause of autonomy of universities.
