Confirming the development, media manager Vinod Deshpande told PTI that the opener took a flight to Delhi this morning after hearing the news of his grandmother's death.

"I don't know when he will be back. It probably will depend on what happens today in the match," Deshpande said.

Reserve Ajinkya Rahane came as a substitute for Gambhir when play started at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera today.
