A film, based on the popular video game series "Gears of War", is being developed at Universal Pictures.
Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark will produce the adaptation via their Universal-based production company, Bluegrass Films, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"Gears" is one of the most popular series in the video game industry, becoming an instant sensation when it burst onto the scene from Epic Games in 2006, setting sales records, winning awards and creating a billion-dollar franchise.
Microsoft touts that the game has 45 million unique users, has sold 27 million copies and has been played 2.3 billion hours, all the while racking up 510 awards and nominations.
Microsoft acquired the "Gears" series in 2014 and co-creator Rod Fergusson returned to lead The Coalition, the Microsoft development studio focused exclusively on Gears.
"Gears of War 4" is set for launch.
Set on the planet Sera, the game thrust players into a battle for survival between humans and a race of creatures that surface from the bowels of the planet known as the Locust Horde.
Players assume identities of soldiers on Delta Squad as they fight to save Sera's inhabitants.
Hollywood has tried to adapt the game since it was first released. New Line spent several years developing one iteration that had Len Wiseman on board to direct and Chris Morgan writing the script.
The rights lapsed and it lay dormant for a few years. Stuber became attached to the project as a producer in 2013.
No writer is on board for the adaptation yet.
