GHMC launches 'adopt street dog' programme

In a bid to check the menace caused by stray dogs, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation today launched a programme under which people can adopt a puppy.
"For the control of stray dog menace effectively, apart from the implementation of stray dog sterilisation Programme (ABC/ARV), the Veterinary Section, GHMC, has started the Stray Dog Adoption programme, which is being implemented with the help volunteers of NGOs and Resident Welfare Association Members recently in North Zone and West Zone, GHMC," GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy said, adding that "Adopt Street Dog" is the first of its kind in the country.
According to an official release, it is estimated that there are over six lakh street dogs in the municipal limits of the city.

"The veterinary wing of GHMC will conduct programmes to neuter at least one lakh animals every year besides giving them anti-rabies vaccine," it said.
"Due to high proliferation rate of breeding of stray dogs, due to migration of good number of street dogs from adjoining Gram Panchayats/Nagar Panchayaths and due to deliberately left pet dogs on roads (abandoned) by the pet dog owners, the dog menace is not totally controlled in GHMC limits," it said.
The civic body conducted awareness programme for the animal lovers and formally launched the dog adoption programme in the North Zone, the release added.
