In a match dubbed as the unofficial final of the men's singles championship, young Soumyajit Ghosh produced some exceptional play to get the better of fancied Sharath Kamal in the last four stage of the 34th PSPB Inter Unit Table Tennis Tournament here today.
Ghosh, representing BPCL, won 11-9 11-8 10-12 10-12 11-8 12-10 to advance to the final to be held at the Jamia Milia Islamia Sports Complex tomorrow and will take on veteran Soumyadeep Roy (IOCL).
Ghosh used the front of the table effectively to gain several service points and his quality of retrieving helped blunt some of Sharath's power hitting. Sharath had beaten Ghosh in the preceding team event.
In the other match, Roy played some good percentage table tennis to beat reigning national champion Sanil Shetty (BPCL) 11-5 11-8 11-6 8-11 13-11.
In the first ladies semi-final, Mouma Das (OIL) got the better of Neha Aggarwal (BPCL) 11-5 11-9 6-11 11-8 11-9 while in the other Shamini Kumaresan (IOCL) beat Divya Deshpande (ONGC) in a closely contested match 11-9 10-12 11-2 7-11 11-4 11-9.
In the men's doubles final Anthony Amalraj and Sathiyan G (ONGC) beat Ghosh and Shetty (BPCL) 11-7 7-11 11-6 6-11 11-9.
The women's doubles final was won by Madhurika Patkar and Pooja Sahesrebudhe of ONGC defeating Mouma Das and Nandita Saha of OIL 12-10 8-11 11-4 11-9.
