A 20-year-old girl was today crushed to death by a sand-laden truck triggering protests by locals in which six policemen were injured in West Bengal's Burdwan district.
The girl was on her way home when she was killed in the mishap on G T Road near Rasulpur market at a spot where an elderly woman was last night run over by another truck, Officer-in-charge of Memari police station, Debabrata Mukhopadhyay said.
Alleging "indifference" by the police, locals blocked the road using electric poles, that were being erected in the area, and refused to hand over her body to the cops.
RAF was rushed in from Burdwan and central forces, who were on route march in the area, also reached the spot to control the situation. The locals then pelted stones at the forces in which six policemen got injured, Mukhopadhyay said.
To control the situation, the police then resorted to lathi charge and bursting of teargas shells and later detained six people.
The body was later recovered and the accused truck driver and helper of the truck were arrested, he added.
