Dilip Tiwari entered the girl's house when only she and her sister were there and tried to molest her, Superintendent of Police Ratan Kumar Srivastava said.
When the victim resisted the attempt, the accused tried to drag her out of the house. But on failing to do so, he allegedly poured kerosene on the girl and set her on fire, Srivastava said.
When residents in the neighbourhood heard the victim's cries, they rushed to the spot and doused the flames. The victim was rushed to the hospital, but she died on the way, he said.
