Even as Goa's meat traders fear
shortage of beef in view of the Centre's notification on sale and purchase of cattle from animal markets for slaughter, the Goa Meat Complex Limited (GMCL) has ruled out any crisis.
"We have been regularly getting animals for slaughtering. There is no dearth of animals or any kind of shortage at present," GMCL Managing Director Uday Pednekar told PTI today.
"We can't comment on beef shortage in future. As and when we get animals, we will provide our abattoir for slaughtering," he said.
The meat traders fear that there might be shortage of beef in Goa as the supply of cattle from neighbouring Karnataka is affected.
"The trucks carrying animals were sent back from the state border into Karnataka due to the recent notification by the central government. There is a fear of backlash if animals are brought in the state," Manna Bepari, of Goa-based Qureshi Meat Traders Association, said.
The government should immediately intervene to ensure that there is no shortage of beef in the state, he said.
Goa Chief Secretary Dharmendra Sharma said the state government has not issued any instruction to stop the transportation of cattle from across the border.
