A minister in the Goa government has threatened protests over the proposed 11 per cent hike in electricity tariff that will come into effect in the state from April 1.

Goa Health Minister Vishwajit Rane, addressing a press conference today, expressed "utter displeasure" at his government accepting the recommendation of the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) for a tariff hike.

"The hike should be withdrawn by April 30, failing which I will lead protests on the streets. I have already spoken to state Power Minister Pandurang Madkaikar expressing my dissatisfaction at the government accepting the JERC's recommendations," Rane told reporters here.

He said that such a huge hike should not be imposed on the people of Goa as they are already reeling under economic problems brought about by the ban on mining since March 16.

Rane said he would also be writing to the Cabinet Advisory Committee, comprising Sudin Dhavalikar (MGP), Francis DSouza (BJP) and Vijai Sardesai (Goa Forward Party), demanding that the government reject the recommendations of the JERC.

State Power Minister Madkaikar could not be contacted for comments.
