Godown fire in Kolkata extinguished in overnight operation

A raging blaze that engulfed a warehouse storing diesel was brought under control in an overnight operation here, Fire Brigade officials today said.
There was no report of any casualty in the fire that broke out in the godown near the Armenian ghat in the central part of the city last night, the police said, adding it had no information about anyone being trapped inside.
The officials said 22 fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the flames. Ten fire tenders were at the spot this morning to put out the fire still smouldering inside the debris of the godown.

The fire broke out at about 8 pm yesterday at the warehouse which contained diesel stored in 20 barrels, West Bengal Fire Minister and Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee had said last night.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar and other senior officials also visited the spot last night.
"We tried to put out the fire completely, showering various pockets with water," a Fire Brigade official said.
Water was sprayed from the Hooghly river and foam was also used to control the flames.
The godown, owned by the Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT), was leased out to a private transport company, Fire Brigade sources said.
