Gogoi said, in a message to his family members, that in Alam's death, the state has lost a gem of a cricketer who represented Assam in several Ranji matches.

"His untimely demise is a great loss to Assam cricket. He passed away at a time when he had so much to contribute for the promotion of the game," he added.

The Chief Minister expressed his sympathy to the members of the bereaved family.

Alam was a prolific batsman who scored 1,398 runs in 22 Ranji matches for Assam with two centuries. In the 1991-92 season against Tripura in a Ranji tie, he along with Lalchand Rajput had scored a record 475 runs partnership for the second wicket partnership. He had scored 257 in the match while Rajput made 239.

He was suffering from a liver ailment for the past several months and was recently admitted to a Bangalore hospital where he died yesterday.
