The decision was taken at a high level meeting to review the drought situation in the wake of deficient rains in the state, except Konkan and Vidarbha.

The Centre will be requested to amend the criteria of EGS works and the GoM will prepare a report highlighting the state government's demand.

Due to the scarcity-like conditions in talukas where rainfall and sowing has been less than 50 per cent, EGS works will need to be sanctioned.

According to officials, approximately 64 talukas in the state have received less than 50 per cent rainfall and sowing of crops and they are likely to face such conditions.

In the next crushing season, sugar factories are likely to start late because of which sugarcane cutters and farm labourers will have to be given adequate work in their own districts.

"All district collectors have been asked to prepare a list of works to be undertaken under EGS," the officials said.

The GoM will be headed by Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Patangrao Kadam. The group will comprise Rural Development Minister Jayant Patil, Co-operation Minister Harshvardhan Patil, Public Undertaking Minister Jaidutt Kshirsagar, Tribal Development Minister Babanrao Pachpute and EGS Minister Nitin Raut.

It was decided to sanction water supply schemes, setting up of cattle camps in talukas where rainfall and sowing has been less than 50 per cent.

The Chief Minister also issued directives to disburse the remaining amount of the Rs 2,000 crores financial package, announced in the last winter session, by August 25 to soyabean, cotton and paddy growers.
