Governor expresses displeasure over indiscipline in varsities

West Bengal Governor M K Narayanan today expressed displeasure over "indiscipline" in some universities in the state and exhorted the administration and student bodies to act to create a proper ambiance.
"There has been a steady deterioration in the quality of discipline among students and to some extent among the faculty. This is severely impacting the delivery of quality education," the Governor said at the 26th convocation of Kalyani University.
He said that it was important for the university administration and student bodies to ensure proper ambiance for the progress in the field of higher education.
Recently the prestigious Presidency University and Gour Banga University witnessed student agitations.

In April, this year, supporters of the Trinamool Congress ransacked some departments of the Presidency University and vandalised the century-old Baker Laboratory of the physics department set up by legendary scientist Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose.
Students owing allegiance to the Trinamool Congress again demonstrated at the Gour Banga University in July this year to protest against the prolonged absence of Vice Chancellor Dr Achinta Biswas, locking up offices of various departments.
"It is not the lack of good students as much as the lack of good teachers and faculty that is responsible for this state of affairs. The main failure to my mind, however is the absence of dedicated teachers- whether they are professors or Assistant Professors," Narayan pointed out.

The university conferred the degree of D.Sc. (Honoris Causa in Absentia) on Padmashri Dr P V A Mohandas, Eminent orthopaedician, and D.Sc. (Honoris Causa) on Professor Manoj Mitra, actor, and Prof Nrisingha Prasadh Bhaduri, a renowned Indologist and a specialist in Indian Epics and Puranas.
