The government today urged Coal India and other mining companies to be more responsible towards environment and safety to safeguard the future of the sector.
"Why just Coal India, I think the entire industry (sector) should be more focused on ensuring safety," Coal Secretary Susheel Kumar said here today at the 7th Asian Mining Congress.
He said it is imperative for the industry to see to it that incidents of accidents came down.
There should not be a repeat of Rajmahal type incidents. We must attain top position in safety by 2019-20," he said.
The industry and all its stakeholders should also be proactive in seeing that environmental hazards are also reduced.
We can achieve our goals on the environment front only when all stakeholders take an active role in the matter. If we do not pay adequate attention, the public pressure would be so enormous that the future of this economic activity (mining) will be in jeopardy. This is a question of existence," Kumar said.
