At least eight people were injured today by a grenade attack in Guatemala City blamed on local gangs.
A police spokesman told AFP that the attack had the hallmarks of "an act of gang extortion."
The attack, in a violence-plagued neighborhood on the margins of Guatemala City, was the second grenade attack in the capital in the past week.
Authorities said the previous attack claimed one life.
The warring Mara 18 and Mara Salvatrucha gangs have been carrying out a blood feud as they vie for control of the area, and have been inflicting violence on local businesses that refuse to pay them protection money, officials said.
