Police in Godhra in Gujarat had to fire teargas shells today after a mob pelted them with stones during an operation to free cows allegedly being taken for slaughter, police said.
Acting on a tip-off, a raid was conducted in the evening today and 14 cows were found tied in an open plot, Godhra B Division Inspector M C Sagatyani said.
"When we tried to free the cows, a group of people started pelting stones at us. We had to fire nine teargas shells to control the situation," he said, adding that no one was hurt in the process.
The cows were freed and a case had been registered for rioting, unlawful assembly, obstructing public servant from discharging duty, among others, he said.
One person, identified as Mohammad Yusuf, had been arrested, the official informed.
