Hearing a public interest litigation alleging non-implementation of the Right to Education (RTE) Act, the Gujarat High Court today asked 16 private schools to keep 25 percent seats vacant for the under-priviledged children in the coming academic year till further order.
The division bench of acting Chief Justice V M Sahai and Justice R P Dholaria also asked the petitioner Prakash Kapadia and these schools to submit suggestions to the state government for effective implementation of the RTE, within 10 days.
In December, in response to the PIL, the High Court had issued notices to these 16 private schools in Ahmedabad district, seeking replies as to whether they were implementing the 25 per cent quota.
Seven schools have submitted their replies while the rest have asked for more time. While hearing the PIL today, the High Court said the schools must comply with the RTE Act.
The next hearing would be on February 23.
