An alleged gunrunner, one of the biggest supplier of illegal arms in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), has been arrested from Meerut, the police said today.
Rifaqat Ali was arrested by a team of the Special Cell from his native village in Meerut yesterday. He carried a reward of Rs 1 lakh, the cell's DCP P S Kushwah said.
A drive was launched by the cell to bust gangs involved in supplying illegal arms in Delhi-NCR. Recently, four people of a gang were caught and 55 sophisticated, semi-automatic pistols and nine magazines were seized from them, the officer said.
During interrogation, the arrested arms traffickers gave up the name of Ali as their main receiver. Four cases under the Arms Act have been registered at the Special Cell police station, against the gang, he said.
The accused told his interrogators that two of his gang members Furkan and Fakira are presently lodged in jail, the officer said.
He also admitted to supplying illegal arms to criminals based in Delhi-NCR at the rate of Rs 20,000 to 25,000 per piece, the DCP claimed.
Four major suppliers of arms and ammunition have been identified on the basis of information provided by Ali and efforts are being made to arrest them, he said.
