A 32-year-old woman today committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her residence in Indirapuram area here, allegedly after being consistently harassed by her husband for dowry.
Based on a complaint filed by the woman's parents, police have arrested her husband, Karan Khanna, and registered a case under dowry death at Indirapuram police station of Ghaziabad.
According to police, Gurpreet Kaur and her husband lived in a flat at Regent Tower of Shipra Sun City, along with their two children.
Police said Karan had allegedly been harassing his wife over dowry since their marriage in January 2008.
Kaur's parents alleged that Karan had frequently asked her to bring money from them.
"Kaur's parents alleged that four months after their marriage, Karan started demanding money from them. On Karan's demand, they recently gave him Rs 15 lakh, but he again asked Kaur to bring Rs 20 lakh more from her parents," said a senior police officer.
The officer said there was a brawl between Kaur and Karan over the issue last night, following which she allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan.
"Based on Kaur's parents, police have arrested Karan and registered a case against him. Police are awaiting her post-mortem report to ascertain the exact cause of her death and further investigation is on," the officer added.
