Haren Sing Bey elected chairman of KAAC

Haren Sing Bey was today elected unopposed as the 27th chairman of the newly formed 12th Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), polls for which were held on June 17.
Bey, who had yesterday filed his nomination papers for the KAAC chairman's post, was declared elected unopposed as he was the lone candidate for the Council's top post, KAAC Legislature department said.
The declaration was made in the presence of Karbi Anglong district Deputy Commissioner and returning officer.
Haren Sing Bey, a former militant and general secretary of the now disbanded United Peoples Democratic Solidarity (UPDS), was an Independent member of the 11th KAAC after he joined mainstream politics following the signing of a tripartite accord with the Centre in 2011 and then participated in the democratic process.
Last year when majority of the Council members joined BJP, Bey had also shifted his allegiance to the saffron party.
Results of the election to the 26-member 12th KAAC was declared on June 22 when BJP had swept the polls winning 24 seats and Independents bagged two seats.
During the last 12 years, 26 chairmen have headed the KAAC holding office for for various lengths of time.
