The Bombay High Court today directed Director General of Police of state Anti-Corruption Bureau to take a decision within a fortnight on a report submitted by the agency on its inquiry against former Maharashtra minister Vijaykumar Gavit over alleged disproportionate assets.
A division bench of Justices N H Patil and V L Achliya was hearing a PIL by activist V R Musale seeking prosecution proceedings against Gavit and his family.
The court was today informed that the ACB has completed its 'open inquiry' against Gavit and his family members and submitted its report to the DGP, who will take a final decision on whether a case has to be lodged or not.
"We direct the DGP to take his decision within a fortnight. The Income Tax department, which has reopened assessment of incomes and assets of Gavit and his family from 2007-08, shall expedite the proceedings. The Income Tax Commissioner, Nashik, shall look into the matter and take appropriate steps," the bench said.
The ACB had earlier held a 'discreet inquiry' into the assets of Gavit and his family members and said it had found material against him. It had sought government's permission to initiate an 'open inquiry' which was granted.
