The Jharkhand High Court today directed the state government to prepare rehabilitation schemes for destitute people after taking suo motu cognisance of a report about a woman eating food from the floor in a government hospital.
A bench of Justices Aparesh Kumar Singh and S Chandrashekhar asked the Health Secretary, Welfare Secretary and Social Welfare Secretary to prepare rehabilitation schemes for such type of destitute people.
The direction came after government advocate Rajesh Kumar, appearing on behalf of the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), submitted that one Muni Devi, to whom the meal was served and she ate it off the floor, was not a patient of RIMS.
He submitted that the woman was mentally challenged and was sitting outside the hospital and demanded food from the meal server and on humanitarian ground he gave the meal on a paper, but the woman put it on the floor and ate.
The advocate said the woman has since been admitted to Ranchi Institute of Neuropsychiatry and Allied Sciences.
The submission came after the court took suo motu cognisance on a newspaper photo, showing the woman eating food from the floor at RIMS last week, and converted it into a PIL.
The PIL was adjourned for the month of November.
