The Calcutta High Court today directed the Asansol Municipality to consider afresh an application for permission to hold 'Sansad Mela', which its organisers claimed was not being given green signal on flimsy reasons.
Justice Harish Tandon directed the Mayor of Asansol Municipality to consider afresh and take a call on the application for permission by tomorrow and communicate the same to the organisers.
He also directed the Mayor to take a free and fair decision without any extraneous condition.
Asansol Municipality in Burdwan district is run by the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal.
The fair, scheduled to be held in Union Minister of State for Heavy Industries Babul Supriyo's Lok Sabha constituency Asansol from January 12, had not been given permission by the municipal body.
'Me to We', co-organisers of the fair, which will showcase the achievements of the Union government in various fields, moved the court after the permission was withheld.
Hearing the petition, Justice Tandon asked the municipal body whether similar conditions which were being put in case of Sansad Mela were imposed on all the fairs in the state.
He also sought to know why the permission of a local school authorities was needed for the fair which is to be held at the Loco Stadium in Asansol, an industrial township situated around 200 kms from Kolkata.
