The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court today directed the Censor Board to file its counter in four weeks on a petition seeking a direction to prevent depiction of "Thiruman", an insignia sported by Vaishnavites on their foreheads, to portray the concept of getting cheated in films.
Justices S Tamilvanan and V S Ravi gave four weeks time to CBFC to file the counter following a request from Assistant Solicitor General G R Swaminathan who submitted that as almost all members of the Board had resigned and the new Board has to be reconstituted it was not possible to give a counter immediately.
Justice Tamilvanan agreed with the counsel for Periyanambi Sri Narasimha Gopalan, a Vaishnavite, that no person had the right to hurt the religious sentiments of others by projecting a religious symbol in bad light.
The counsel said "Thiruman was actually a depiction of Lord Narayana's lotus feet and it was not fair on the part of movie-makers to project it as sign to refer to the gullible or naive person.
