The Madurai bench of the Madras High Court has issued suo motu criminal contempt of court notice to an advocate for reportedly disrupting court proceedings on September 16 last and challenging it to take action against him if "it had guts."
According to the notice issued by the Deputy Registrar (Judicial), a division bench, comprising Justices R Sudhakar and V.M.Velumani, had ordered the registry on September 16 to issue a notice calling on on W Peter Ramesh Kumar to show cause as to why action should not be taken against him for "comitting" acts of contempt.
Kumar is a former president of the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court Advocates Association.
The contempt case would be heard by a bench comprising Justices V.Ramasubramanian and N.Kirubakaran.
On September 16, there was heated exchange of words between Kumar and Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry (BCTP) lawyers over the issue of 12 lawyers protesting in the Chief Justice's court hall in Chennai demanding Tamil be declared as official language of the court.
Justice Sudhakar intervened and warned protesting lawyers of stern action when Kumar had reportedly challenged the court to take action against him if it had "guts". Kumar has already been suspended by the Bar Council of India in connection with the protest.
