HC rejects artist's plea against refusal of admission in NSD

A casual artist's plea against refusal of admission to her in a 3-year diploma course in National School of Drama (NSD) was today dismissed by the Delhi High Court saying "it was an attempt to tarnish the image of the institution."
Rejecting one Charumati Khandare's plea alleging the role of one out of the eight members in the selection committee, Justice V K Jain said "it appears to me that the present writ petition is nothing but an attempt by an unsuccessful candidate to tarnish the image of the institution which did not select her."
".... Since Mr X (a member in the selection committee) was only one of the members of the selection committee, there being as many as seven other members, it cannot be accepted that he was able to prevail upon the remaining members of the selection committee to reject the petitioner in the final interview," the court said and dismissed her plea.

The court also took note of her failure to make a request to exclude the member from the selection committee on the ground that he was biased against her.
"...There was no complaint made by her against him or in fact even against another member whom she alleges to be a friend of X. If the allegations made in the writ petition against X are true, there was no reason for the petitioner not to make a request for excluding him from the selection committee before which she was to appear for the final interview", the order said.
According to the plea, the petitioner had worked as a casual artist in NSD till July 2012 and applied for admission in a three-year diploma course for the year 2013-2016 in the same institution.

She claimed she had cleared the first round of interview-cum-audition but was not selected in the final round of interview-cum-workshop for admission in the diploma course.
In her plea, she alleged that due to X (who was one of the members in selection committee) was biased against her, she was refused admission.
