The Allahabad High Court today imposed a cost of Rs 1 lakh on the Uttar Pradesh Director General of Medical Education for failure to file a detailed counter affidavit on a petition alleging irregularities in admissions to post-graduate courses in private medical colleges.
A division bench comprising Justice Tarun Agarwala and Justice Ashok Kumar passed the order on noticing that though a detailed counter affidavit had been sought by the court during the previous hearing, the reply filed by the respondent was short.
The court also directed the official to file a counter affidavit containing details of the admission process by August 18.
It asked the petitioner to submit a rejoinder to the same by the next date of hearing on August 22.
The order was passed on a petition filed by a medical student, Bhavna Tripathi, who moved the court alleging that while candidates were selected on merit in the first two rounds of counselling, the qualifying marks were decreased in the third round.
The petitioner had alleged that it had adversely affected meritorious students and "wrongly" benefited private colleges and those who had scored lower marks.
