Vishwa Hindu Parishad senior leader Pravin Togadia today said they will come up with a "protection plan" for Hindus to safeguard them against "persecution" in the country.
Addressing VHP functionaries on the first day of its three-day national conclave here, he said, "We will make an action plan for the protection of Hindus as Hindus are still not protected in villages and they suffer humiliation and persecution.
"VHP will play the role of 'Jatayu' (a mythical mighty bird in Ramayana who had fought Ravana) and will fight for the protection of Hindus."
The city is hosting the annual meet of VHP's prabandh samiti (management committee) and pranyasi mandal (board of trustees) after a gap of 32 years.
"Around 20 crore Hindus in our country are still illiterate and VHP is working to make them literate, capable and prosperous," the VHP international working president said.
He said more than one lakh cows get killed in the country every year, "which is very unfortunate."
On construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya, he said, "Ram mandir is not only the concern of VHP, but it is the matter of faith for crores of Hindus. The temple will come up only after a law is passed in Parliament," he added.
VHP International Secretary Champat Rai yesterday said the resolutions on a national law against cow slaughter and for adopting uniform civil code are expected to be passed in the meet.
Over 300 VHP functionaries from country and abroad are in attendance.
