: Chief Minister N Rangasamy today hoped the new government at the Centre would soon concede the Union Territory's long pending demand for statehood.
Replying to a question tabled jointly by A M H Nazeem (DMK) and A Anbalagan (AIADMK) in the assembly on resolutions adopted in the House in the past in this regard, he said resolutions were adopted in all sessions held between 1987 and 2012 and forwarded to the Union Home Ministry.
He said a viability report was also sent to the Ministry in 1993, 1995, 1999 and 2004.
"We will renew our plea and soon present a report prepared by Chennai based Financial Management and Research Centre in support of demand for statehood'.
He said letters were also sent to the Union Home Minister and Planning Commission, seeking waiver of Rs 3289 crore due from the Puducherry government to Centre over the years as loans and interest thereto.
Expressing hope that the new government at the Centre would sanction statehood in response to the UT's plea, he said once this was achieved, the loans and interest would be waived.
