HP continues to shiver under cold wave

Himachal Pradesh continued to suffer extreme cold conditions as high altitude areas recorded temperatures between minus 24 degrees Celsius and minus 34 degrees Celsius.
Keylong in tribal Lahaul district witnessed the coldest night of the season last night with mercury plunging to minus 17 degrees Celsius.
Bharmaur and Kalpa in tribal areas recorded minimum temperatures at minus 16 degrees Celsius and minus 7 degrees Celsius while the tourist resort of Manali shivered at minus 6.6 degrees Celsius, five notches below normal.
The Hindustan-Tibet National Highway was opened via Narkanda but vehicular traffic was not restored due to slippery road conditions while Chopal and Nerwa areas of Shimla remained cut off for the fourth day.
The NH was opened up to Rohroo and vehicular traffic to Theog, Kotkhai and Hatkoti resumed after clearing of snow at Khara-Patthar, Deputy Commissioner, Shimla, Dinesh Malhotra said.
Minimum temperatures hovered around freezing point at Shimla, Chamba, Sundernagar, Bhuntar and Dalhousie at 0. 2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.8 degrees Celsius respectively.
Hamirpur recorded a low of 1 degrees Celsius followed by Palampur 1.5, Kangra 1.6, Solan 2, Una 3.4, Dharamsala 3.8 and Nahan 4.4 degrees Celsius.
Maximum temperatures rose significantly by four to five degrees and Una was hottest with a high of 22.4 degrees Celsius followed by Sundernagar 21.4, Solan 19.5, Bhunter 18.2, Nahan 16.3, Dharamsala 15.8, Shimla 13.9 and Kalpa 1.4 degrees Celsius.
Half a dozen trees were uprooted after heavy snowfall while sewerage lines, power lines and roof of Braham Kumari centre were damaged as trees fell on the house near Dayanand School.
The MeT office predicted mainly dry weather in the next 24 hours.
