HP Guv calls for qualitative improvement in education

Himachal Pradesh Governor Acharya Devvrat today called for taking adequate measures for bringing qualitative improvement in education and said in spite of a quantum jump in literacy rate, providing quality education remains a major challenge.
Presiding over the state-level Teachers' Day function at the Raj Bhawan, where he conferred state awards to 10 teachers, the Governor also underlined the need to educate the teaching community about child psychology to make the teaching-learning process effective.
Devvrat urged the teachers to work with honesty and dedication and said they should become a role model for the students.
Asserting that India had been a world leader in the field of education since ancient times and students from different parts of the world came here for attaining knowledge, he said "gurus" (teachers) were considered as nation builders and held in highest esteem. Welfare of the society at large was the basic purpose of education.

The Governor also paid tributes to former President Dr S Radhakrishanan and described him as a man of veracious personality, a noble laureate, academician, philosopher and an able administrator.
Four National Award Winners teachers for this year, Dr Chandreshwar Sharma, Kashmir Singh, Ram Pal, Sandesh Sharma were also honoured on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh said teachers willingly working in remote and tribal areas should also be awarded and, if need be, the number of state-level awards could be increased.
The teachers who received the awards today got it due to their hard-work and dedication and needs appreciation, he said, adding Himachal Pradesh is second only to Kerala with 88 per cent literacy rate because of the hard work and dedication of the teachers.

The Chief Minister said the government is keen to provide quality education to the children near to their homes and 1,010 schools were either upgraded or opened mostly in far flung areas to facilitate the education of girl child.
He also said the government is providing Rs 75,000 every student from the state who qualify admissions in the IITs, the IIMs and AIIMS.
