Actress Madhuri Dixit believes "Hum Aapke Hain Koun!", which completed 21 years this month, continues to be loved by the audience because its story of sacrificing one's love for family resonates even today.
"I am happy that people like to watch it even after 21 years. I think they love the film because it is true to what happens in Indian families. The story of 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun!' was very Indian," Madhuri, who was in the city to inaugurate PNG Jewellers' new store, told reporters.
"Hum Aap Ke Hain Koun!" hit the screens on August 5 in 1994. Madhuri and Salman Khan played the lead roles of Nisha and Prem respectively in the Sooraj Barjatya-directed movie.
The 48-year-old actress does not feel that the heroines in '80s and '90s only did commercial films.
"It is not true that we did only commercial movies. Despite the many constrains of commercial cinema, I played challenging roles in movies like 'Prahar' and 'Mrityudand'.
"But it is true that there are many positive changes for women in cinema today. You see women in every department of filmmaking - be it direction, cinematography or lighting today. In our era, the only women to be seen on a movie set were either actresses or hair-stylists," she said.
