A code of conduct for teachers, banning political activity by faculty on campus, and sensitisation of students on issues related to caste, gender and religion are among the recommendations of a one-member committee that went into the affairs of Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC).
Joint secretary in the I&B Ministry Mihir Kumar Singh had been tasked to look at various aspects related to the functioning of IIMC and submit a report after incidents related to "offensive" posts on social media came to light.
In one case, the remarks were against the SC/ST communities, while in another against a faculty member.
Among the measures recommended by the senior official is the formation of a Code of Discipline and Conduct for students and a disciplinary committee.
Other institutional mechanisms include an SC/ST cell to deal with their grievances, a Dean of Students Welfare and Student Welfare representatives.
The senior ministry official has also recommended a code of Conduct for Teachers and Employees which, among other things, should "ban political activity by the faculty on campus."
The report by the senior official also says introduction of a professional code of conduct for teachers and employees is a must to control indiscipline and will also be helpful in conducting inquiries etc.
The report recommends sensitisation of students, who come from diverse backgrounds, on matters related to caste, gender, religion, creed etc which will increase their understanding and improve camaraderie.
The report has also suggested a social media and a media interaction policy for the institute and other measures like biometric attendance, monthly report on classes taken by faculty, equitable distribution of classes among professors and formation of an academic council with proper outside representation.
