With a view to promote the use of Hindi language for official purposes, the information and broadcasting ministry plans to take the help of technology for translation works, an official said.
He said the ministry was looking to purchase the software translation services of Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), an organisation under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
The service will cost around Rs 7.5 lakh as one-time payment and Rs 1.2 lakh annually, he added.
"The move will give a major push to the use of Hindi for official works in the ministry and help to meet the target of minimum use of Hindi in the ministry as per the Department of Official Languages," the official said.
Some media reports last year suggested the Information and Broadcasting ministry could achieve only 35 per cent in Hindi file notings and just 36 out of its 98 officers doing 70 per cent or more of their work in Hindi.
The reports were based on the review done for 20 central departments. Other ministries and departments that had fallen short of using Hindi included the home and the NITI Aayog.
The I&B ministry representative had reportedly said that since most of its works pertained to technical services, using Hindi for official work was difficult.
