The students were on their way to a national-level eligibility test for PhD programme at New Town from Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) campus hostel at Shibpur in Howrah when the accident occurred.
The car crashed into the median divider after descending from Maa flyover to the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass, injuring the four students and the driver of the vehicle, the police said.
The cause of the crash is being probed, he said.
The driver of the vehicle is under treatment at the National Medical College and Hospital.
IIEST director Ajoy Roy told PTI that the four were students of MSc Physics and were going to New Town to appear for the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST) when they met with the accident.
He said they were first taken to the state-run National Medical College and Hospital and had to be shifted to a private facility later.
