IIT-Kgp makes project-based learning compulsory for students

Giving students the opportunity to earn extra credits for improving their score, IIT Kharagpur is making it mandatory for all its undergraduates to work on projects involving experts from the industry.
IIT-Kgp officials said the new project-based learning program is aimed at enabling quality academic engagement of the undergraduate students through which they can learn and explore the technical domains of their interest.
Another point will be to promote creative and innovative thinking that will result in a marketable working product.
"The projects will also involve experts from the industry. This will enrich the industry experience of the students and improve their employability. Interdisciplinary projects will be encouraged," officials said.

Funded by the institute, the projects will start from autumn semester of 2016-17 academic session when it will be made compulsory for first year students.
A team of 25 faculty mentors have been selected for formal mentoring of students.
A website is also being developed for students to upload their project ideas.
Product oriented projects will be encouraged, officials said.
