The number of illegal narcotic drug users in Nepal has doubled over the last five years, according to a survey.
The number of drug users which was figured at 50,000 five years ago has reached 91,000, the Federation of Drug Demand Reduction (FDDR) said yesterday in a press conference here.
Rajiv Kafle, Chairman of Nava Kiran Plus - an NGO working for the rehabilitation of the drug addicts - has demanded the Nepal government initiate programmes for the treatment and rehabilitation of all the drug users.
Currently, there are as many as 160 drugs rehabilitation centres operating in different parts of the country.
The data shows that 3200 drug addicts have been receiving treatment from these rehabilitation centres in a year.
Kafle said government has not established even a single correction centre so far despite its commitments to open up a model rehabilitating centre in all five development regions across the country.
