BJP today alleged that trade of illicit liquor is flourishing in Akhilesh Yadav government and has resulted in a number of deaths in the recent past.
"Since the Akhilesh-led government has come into power, trade of illicit liquor is flourishing rapidly, resulting in deaths," UP BJP's spokesperson Vijay Bahadur Pathak alleged.
He questioned why the state government does not launch a crackdown on illicit liquor trade, except suspensions and announcement of financial assistance.
"The government is failing to act tough against those involved in trade of illicit liquor due to their proximity with the people in the corridors of power. Samajwadi Party people have become puppets of illicit liquor traders," Pathak said.
Four persons died and several others fell ill after consuming spurious liquor in Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh yesterday, following which seven government officials including district excise official and police officials have been suspended.
Expressing grief over yesterday's incident, Pathak said, it was the third incident in Unnao district in the recent past and 16 people had died so far.
The state government announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to each of the victims' family.
Also, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav directed concerned officials to check sale of spurious liquor and arrest those involved in it.
