India's Border Security Force today handed over Rs 50,000 as compensation to a Bangladeshi man who was allegedly tortured two years ago for intruding into Indian territory, Bangladeshi officials said.
Habibur Rahman, 22, was allegedly tortured for trespassing into Murshidabad district through the Chapainawabganj border. He was allegedly left on the frontier in a critical state with his hands and legs tied.
"BSF Commandant Raj Kumar handed him (Rahman) Rs 50,000 at a flag meeting with BGB (Border Guard Bangladesh) officials on the frontier," a BGB spokesman told reporters.
He claimed BSF officials expressed regret for the incident and assured their counterparts that such incidents would not be repeated in future.
The incident had sparked protests by rights groups as Indian media broadcast a video showing Rahman being stripped and severely beaten.
Bangladeshi villagers found Rahman and sent him to a hospital.
