Anish Rao was handed down the prison term by the Auckland District Court yesterday for biting off the top of the left ear of Ritesh Ram, who was in a relationship with Rao's former lover Vikashni Ashari.
Rao illegally entered into Ram's property last year and smashed open a door to move into the house in Auckland's suburb where Ram and his partner Ashari were sleeping.
He attacked Ram, 28, that night and bit his left ear. Leaving Ram in a pool of blood, Rao then went for Ashari and punched her in the face before fleeing the house. Ashari and Rao have a three-year-old daughter, Stuff.Co.Nz reported today.
"What I lost that night will stay fresh no matter what."
Anish Rao pleaded guilty to a charge of disfiguring with intent to injure and one of assaulting a female.
Judge Brooke Gibson described the offence as "particularly callous and spiteful" and jailed Rao for two years and three months.
His lawyer Martin Hislop said Rao's split from Ashari had left him "obsessed" and the home invasion followed a slew of abusive text messages and phone calls.
"I don't see any remorse in the pre-sentence report," he said.
He was also ordered to pay USD 500 for the damage to the door.
